Administrative Functions
Direct day‑to‑day functions of nursing assistants in accordance with facility rules, regulations, and guidelines.
Ensure all nursing personnel comply with written policies and procedures established by the facility.
Periodically review department policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions; recommend revisions.
Meet with assigned nursing staff and support personnel to plan shift services, programs, and activities.
Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual and ensure it reflects current nursing procedures.
Ensure compliance with the Nursing Service Procedures Manual and personnel job descriptions.
Make written and oral reports/recommendations regarding shift activities as required.
Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to maintain the resident’s total care regimen.
Participate in the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
Participate in facility surveys and inspections by authorized government agencies.
Review and update residents’ written discharge plans; assist in planning the nursing services portion of plans.
Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required; complete accident/incident reports, resident charge slips, and daily census reports.
Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
Maintain confidentiality of user IDs, passwords, protected health information, and report any violations to the Administrator.
Charting and DocumentationComplete and file record‑keeping forms and charts upon admission, transfer, and discharge.
Encourage attending physicians to review treatment plans and sign orders and progress notes.
Receive telephone orders from physicians and record them on the physicians’ order form; transcribe orders to resident charts and medication cards.
Chart nurses’ notes descriptively to reflect care provided and resident responses.
Fill out and complete accident/incident and transfer forms; report discrepancies in orders or charting errors.
Sign and date all entries in the resident’s medical record.
Drug Administration FunctionsPrepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician; verify resident identity and ensure medication fidelity.
Maintain adequate floor stock of medications, supplies, and equipment; order as necessary.
Ensure narcotic records are accurate and notify the Nurse Supervisor of any discrepancies.
Review medication cards for completeness; notify physicians of automatic stop orders.
Dispose of drugs and narcotics according to facility procedures.
Personnel FunctionsParticipate in employee performance evaluations and staffing decisions; recommend staffing and personnel changes.
Inform the Nurse Supervisor of staffing needs and absenteeism; develop work assignments.
Provide leadership to nursing personnel on the unit/shift; conduct daily rounds to ensure compliance with nursing standards.
Ensure all nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from approved training programs.
Maintain rapport with inter‑department personnel and other departments.
Create a supportive, calm environment throughout the unit and shift.
Review complaints and grievances; report to the Nurse Supervisor and ensure fair disciplinary action.
Nursing Care FunctionsInform nursing personnel of new admissions and room assignments; ensure units are prepared for admissions.
Greet and escort newly admitted residents; orient new residents and families to the facility.
Requisition diagnostic and therapeutic services; consult with physicians; review resident charts.
Implement nursing objectives and standards; monitor prescribed treatments and residents’ status.
Coordinate social and activity programs with nursing schedules; notify physicians of incidents or changes in condition.
Carry out restorative and rehabilitative programs; administer professional services such as catheterization, tube feeding, suction, dressing changes, colostomy bags, lab specimen collection, and range‑of‑motion exercises.
