Description

Under the direction of the department Manager and supervision of a nurse, performs a variety of non-professional nursing duties supporting the direct care of patients. This position provides continuous observation and monitoring of patients at high risk of causing injury to self or others during their hospital stay and safely performs a variety of patient care tasks.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current and unencumbered licensure as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) through the Nevada State Board of Nursing
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers
  • Two (2) years of experience as CNA

Preferred

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • Experience in acute or critical care setting
Unit Specific Requirements

Medical Oncology

Required

  • Must successfully complete Non-Violent Crisis Intervention within six (6) months of hire or position entry
Essential Functions
  • Provides for patient’s personal hygiene: bathing, oral care, bowel and bladder elimination (including emptying/changing colostomy bags), nail care, skin care, dressing and grooming, bed-making as needed
  • Provides for activities of daily living: meal setup and feeding assistance, ambulation, turning and positioning patients, and delivering fresh water and nourishment between meals
  • Administers dry sterile and non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, warming and/or cooling devices, applies restraints, and performs specimen collection. Assists with patient care as directed by the nurse within the CNA scope of practice
  • Performs and records vital signs, input/output, height and weight as per unit standard. Reports observations and changes to the nurse caring for the patient in a timely manner
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency call lights promptly
  • Documentation of any and all care provided
  • Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees
  • Maintains good working relations among nursing unit personnel and other hospital team members; fosters an educational and professional climate
  • Utilizes resources and materials efficiently, safely and cost-effectively; maintains an orderly and clean environment; transports and uses equipment safely
  • Maintains professional competence through formal education, workshops and unit-specific education
  • Attends/completes 100% of all required Unit and Hospital education events and meets established deadlines
  • Adheres to bedside handover as per organizational standards; provides accurate report to oncoming CNA and attending nurse; demonstrates proficiency within the first three (3) months
  • Demonstrates ability to navigate electronic medical records and paper documentation for documenting care and handover communication
  • Performs duties as a patient care sitter when needed, monitors safety for patients at risk of harm, and maintains a safe environment
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information; demonstrates tact and courtesy in interactions
  • Adheres to Carson Tahoe Health policies, procedures and unit standards of care
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings/conferences; completes required Unit and Hospital education and Employee Health annual requirements by deadlines
  • Maintains required licenses and certifications on the provided platform; maintains current competencies
  • Identifies learning needs and seeks guidance or additional training as needed
  • Accurately reports and documents care provided; responds appropriately in urgent or emergency situations
