Overview

This is a supervisory position in the Habitat Division, Eastern Region overseeing up to six regional habitat biologists and one contract position through the Wildlife Management Institute. The position provides regional supervision of habitat activities and guidance across three primary program areas: restoration and rehabilitation, private lands, and Wildlife Management Areas (WMA).

The restoration and rehabilitation program involves coordinating, planning, funding, and implementing large-scale restoration and rehabilitation projects and providing direction to employees under this program. The private lands program provides technical advisement and financial support to private landowners to improve wildlife habitat values on private lands. Private lands work also involves developing conservation and access easements, acquisitions, and water rights investigations. Persons under the direction of this position manage WMAs and other state-owned properties (Bruneau, Argenta, Franklin Lake, Birch Creek, Kingston Canyon, Pole Canyon, Snowstorms).

The WMA program includes managing state-owned land to provide healthy habitat for wildlife and for recreational purposes. This position will provide support to the Technical Guidance program as needed, particularly for projects regarding vegetation management. This position will perform other duties as assigned and represent the Habitat Division at meetings and to the public.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and provide regional guidance for habitat activities across three program areas: restoration and rehabilitation, private lands, and WMAs.
  • Coordinate, plan, fund, and implement large-scale restoration and rehabilitation projects; provide direction to program staff.
  • Provide technical advisement and financial support to private landowners to improve wildlife habitat values; work on conservation and access easements, acquisitions, and water rights investigations.
  • Manage state-owned properties and WMAs (e.g., Bruneau, Argenta, Franklin Lake, Birch Creek, Kingston Canyon, Pole Canyon, Snowstorms) and ensure healthy habitat and recreational use.
  • Support the Technical Guidance program as needed, particularly for vegetation management projects.
  • Represent the Habitat Division at meetings and to the public; perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management or a closely related field; four years of professional experience in wildlife, fisheries or habitat management; OR one year of experience as a Biologist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Supervise and participate in wildlife, botanical and habitat studies; conduct wildlife surveys and inventories to determine population status and management needs.
  • Organize and implement fish, wildlife, botanical and habitat surveys; collect data using various techniques and equipment.
  • Analyze data to calculate population status; prepare species distribution and density maps; develop management recommendations and technical reports.
  • Provide input to land management planning processes; prepare technical reports and appear before regulatory bodies as needed.
  • Draft species management plans; develop season and harvest recommendations; analyze data and proposals to balance public needs with wildlife resources.
  • Coordinate state and regional activities with federal and state agencies, special interest groups and the public; represent the department and prepare communications for the public and media.
  • Under general supervision, direct operation of wildlife programs within a region and supervise assigned personnel; perform administrative duties and ensure compliance with contracts and procedures.
  • Train, supervise, evaluate staff; develop training needs and performance standards; manage grants, budgets, and equipment maintenance; prepare progress reports and related documents.
