Overview
This position is with the Department of Administration, State Public Works Division, Buildings and Grounds Section, located in Carson City. The position is supervised by the Facility Supervisor 3 and requires a Monday‑through‑Friday schedule (8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. with a one‑hour lunch). It involves journey‑level, skilled work in the building and mechanical trades to repair, construct, alter, and maintain buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds as needed for all State facilities under the Division in Northern Nevada, in accordance with established policies and procedures and within the position’s scope of responsibility.
The role may require travel to multiple locations, flexible work for emergency situations, and participation in the on‑call rotation.
- Maintain, repair, modify plumbing systems and fixtures; review blueprints, determine the best methods for system modification, calculate materials and costs, replace lines, assemble pipes, install hot water heaters, and repair three‑phase well pumps and controls.
- Construct, maintain, repair, and modify facilities, fixtures, furniture, and woodwork; review plans, lay out projects, purchase materials, construct forms, pour and finish concrete for slabs and floors, construct roofs and walls, and install doors and windows.
- Review blueprints and schematics; calculate load requirements; lay out projects and install wiring, fixtures, and equipment in accordance with code requirements; install switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels; troubleshoot and repair electric motors, generators, and equipment.
- Prepare surfaces and apply paint with brushes and airless spray equipment; apply wall coverings; stain and varnish furniture to maintain the condition and appearance of structures, furniture, and fixtures.
- Maintain equipment in proper working order; repair carburetors; overhaul automatic and standard transmissions; repair front and rear differentials; repair hydraulic systems on light, medium, and heavy equipment.
- Serve as a lead worker or first‑line supervisor to semi‑skilled or general‑labor staff such as maintenance repair workers, grounds service workers, and custodial workers.
- Maintain equipment maintenance and facility records and prepare related reports.
Perform related duties as assigned.
QualificationsFour years of progressively responsible experience under the supervision of journey‑level trades persons in two or more of the major building or mechanical trades which included responsibility for performing a variety of repair and maintenance activities, laying out jobs and ordering materials; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
- Working knowledge of safety hazards and safe working procedures; standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the building and mechanical trades for maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
- Ability to prepare written work orders, requisition supplies, and prepare specifications; read and interpret repair orders, service manuals, and building codes; read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and electrical schematics; plan projects, sketch working drawings, and lay out materials; estimate material and time requirements; perform arithmetic for dimensions and material needs; work on ladders, scaffolding, and confined building access areas; use diagnostic and testing equipment.
- Skill in safely operating and maintaining hand and power tools; performing a variety of work in two or more of the major building or mechanical trades (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, welding, equipment mechanics); operating and maintaining vehicles and equipment as required by the agency.
