Position: Sewer Technician 1, Sewer Technician 2 or Sewer Technician 3

Job Overview

This posting will fill 1 vacancy and may be used to fill a Sewer Technician 1, 2 or 3 position. It is a full‑time, non‑exempt position in the Public Works department of Carson City, Nevada. The role involves semi‑skilled maintenance, repair, and construction of sewer system infrastructure under general supervision.

Salary Range
  • Sewer Technician 1 – Employer‑Paid PERS: $22.70–$31.78 hourly;
    Employee/Employer‑Paid PERS: $27.39–$38.34 hourly.
  • Sewer Technician 2 – Employer‑Paid PERS: $24.53–$34.34 hourly;
    Employee/Employer‑Paid PERS: $29.59–$41.42 hourly.
  • Sewer Technician 3 – Employer‑Paid PERS: $26.98–$37.77 hourly;
    Employee/Employer‑Paid PERS: $32.55–$45.57 hourly.

Responsibilities
  • Excavate, inspect, flush, clean, and repair sewer mains and lines; perform leak repairs.
  • Operate construction equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front loaders, rodder, and jack hammer.
  • Locate and mark underground sewer infrastructure.
  • Use specialized equipment to inspect pipe conditions and locate laterals.
  • Clean and maintain work facilities and job sites.
  • Perform dye tests and confined space entries with proper safety precautions.
  • Ensure use of traffic control measures in accordance with regulations.
  • Read and interpret diagrams, blueprints, specifications, and manuals.
  • Offer suggestions to improve unit efficiency and participate as an active team member.
  • Maintain records of work performed and materials used.
  • Drive city vehicles to work sites and transport materials and coworkers; use lift trucks and ladders when needed.
  • Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff.
Minimum Qualifications – Sewer Technician 1

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Minimum Qualifications – Sewer Technician 2

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of public‑works maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination as determined by Human Resources.

Minimum Qualifications – Sewer Technician 3

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED; AND three (3) years of public‑works maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination as determined by Human Resources.

Required Certificates, Licenses & Registrations – Technicians 1 & 2
  • Valid class B driver’s license within eight (8) months of employment.
  • Nevada Water Environment Association (NWEA) or California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Sewer Collections Grade 1 certificate within eighteen (18) months.
  • OSHA 10 certificate within three (3) months.
  • Flagger certificate within eight (8) months.
  • Confined Space Entry certificate within eight (8) months.
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical examination and a respiratory fit test.
Required Certificates, Licenses & Registrations – Technician 3
  • Valid class A driver’s license.
  • OSHA 10 certification.
  • CWEA/Nevada Sewer Collections Grade 2 certification.
  • Flagger certification.
  • Confined Space Entry certification.
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical examination and a respiratory fit test.
Required Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of construction technology related to sewer cleaning and maintenance; use of hand and power tools; safety regulations; shop mathematics; record keeping; underground and above‑ground facility maintenance; operation of construction equipment; cement construction techniques.

Skill in safe use and maintenance of tools; accurate arithmetic calculations; reading and interpreting plans; following oral and written directions; preparing records and reports; operating various motorized equipment; contributing to team goals; performing general maintenance work.

Supervision

Under General Supervision – assignments and objectives are governed by specific methods and sequences, with regular checks to ensure compliance.
