Position: MAINTENANCE REPAIR SPECIALIST 2

Job Summary

This opportunity is located at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. The Maintenance Repair Specialist 2 is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and modifying projects related to plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, and equipment. Incumbents review blueprints and schematics, calculate load requirements, install switches, relays, circuit breaker panels, wiring, and fixtures. The Specialist must function as a lead worker for inmate crews on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports.

Typical work schedule is Monday‑Friday 8:00 am‑5:00 pm (subject to change). Extended hours may be required on short notice in cases of emergency.

Essential Qualifications

Four years of progressively responsible experience under the supervision of journey‑level trade persons in two or more major building or mechanical trades and one year of journey‑level experience that included responsibility for performing repair/maintenance activities, laying out jobs and ordering materials; OR one year of journey‑level experience as a Maintenance Repair Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Job Duties
  • Perform skilled plumbing work: maintain, repair, modify plumbing systems and fixtures; review blueprints; determine methods; calculate material quantities; replace lines; install hot water heaters; repair three‑phase electric well pumps and controls.
  • Perform skilled carpentry work: construct, maintain, repair, and modify facilities, fixtures, furniture, and woodwork; review plans; lay out projects; purchase materials; construct forms, pour and finish concrete slabs and floors; construct roofs and walls; install doors and windows.
  • Perform skilled electrical work: review blueprints and schematics; calculate load requirements; lay out projects; install wiring, fixtures, and equipment; install switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels; troubleshoot and repair motors, generators, and equipment.
  • Perform skilled painting work: prepare surfaces; apply paint with brushes and airless spray equipment; apply wall coverings; stain and varnish furniture.
  • Perform skilled equipment mechanical work: maintain equipment; repair carburetors; overhaul automatic and standard transmissions; repair front and rear differentials; repair hydraulic systems on light, medium, and heavy equipment.
  • Serve as a lead worker or first line supervisor to semi‑skilled or general labor staff; maintain equipment maintenance and facility records; prepare related reports.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of advanced practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building and mechanical trades; one year of journey‑level experience related to maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • State and local building and fire codes relevant to position.
  • Ability to set priorities based on agency needs; modify and adapt designs, procedures, or methods to improve efficiency; inspect and review work of subordinates and contractors.
