This is a full‑time permanent position in the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Division of Museums and History, Nevada State Museum, Carson City. The position works under the direction of the Facility Supervisor and is responsible for a range of duties. Perform a variety of skilled work in two or more of the mechanical and construction trades to repair, construct, and/or maintain buildings, grounds and equipment.
The majority of skilled maintenance and repair work is performed in‑house.
Four years of progressively responsible experience under the supervision of journey‑level tradespersons in two or more of the major building or mechanical trades is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities include:
- Planning, laying out, and preparing cost estimates for projects.
- Performing skilled plumbing work: reviewing blueprints, determining modifications, measuring and cutting pipe, assembling and joining pipes by threading or soldering, installing and repairing hot water heaters, repairing three‑phase electric well pumps and controls.
- Performing skilled carpentry work: constructing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying facilities, fixtures, furniture and woodwork; reviewing plans; laying out projects; constructing forms, pouring, and finishing concrete for slabs and floors; constructing roofs and walls; installing doors and windows.
- Performing skilled electrical work: reviewing blueprints and schematics, calculating load requirements, laying out projects, installing wiring, fixtures, and equipment; installing switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels; troubleshooting and repairing electric motors, generators, and equipment.
- Performing skilled painting work: preparing surfaces, applying paint with brushes and airless spray equipment, applying wall coverings, staining and varnishing furniture.
- Performing skilled equipment‑mechanical work: maintaining equipment, repairing carburetors, overhauling transmissions, repairing differentials, repairing hydraulic systems on light, medium, and heavy equipment.
- Leading or supervising semi‑skilled or general labor staff such as maintenance repair workers, grounds service workers, and custodial workers.
- Maintaining equipment and facility records and preparing related reports.
- Performing related duties as assigned.
- Safety hazards and safe working procedures.
- Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the building and mechanical trades as related to the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
- Prepare written work orders, requisition supplies, and prepare specifications.
- Read and interpret repair orders, service manuals, and building codes.
- Read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and electrical schematics.
- Plan projects, sketch working drawings, and lay out materials.
- Estimate the materials and time required to complete projects.
- Perform basic arithmetic to calculate dimensions, volumes, capacities, and material needs.
- Work on ladders and scaffolding and in confined building access areas.
- Use diagnostic and testing equipment.
- Safely operating and maintaining hand and power tools used in the building and mechanical trades.
- Performing work in two or more major building or mechanical trades including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, welding, and equipment mechanics.
- Operating and maintaining vehicles and equipment as required by the agency.
