Job Overview
Highway Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify medium (GVWR 10,500–26,000 lbs.) and heavy (GVWR > 26,000 lbs.) highway maintenance and construction equipment including single and tandem axle dump trucks, motor graders, chip spreaders, truck mounted backhoes, diesel powered rotary snow blowers, ten‑wheel water trucks, front end loaders, tractor/trailer combinations and pavement grinding machines.
This position is in Carson City. Incumbents diagnose, maintain, modify and repair Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) equipment and keep the district fleet in good repair for routine highway maintenance and emergency response.
Responsibilities- Diagnose, repair, rebuild brake systems, steering and suspension components, differential and drive line components, and service automatic and manual transmissions.
- Repair electrical and wiring systems, including troubleshooting and use of testing equipment.
- Fabricate, install parts, components, and special‑use items to keep the fleet in safe operating condition.
- Prepare repair orders, requisition supplies, and document equipment condition.
- Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship program, the Equipment Mechanic‑in‑Training program in Nevada State service, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Working knowledge of equipment systems and operating characteristics of medium and heavy highway maintenance and construction equipment from various manufacturers.
- Basic arc and acetylene welding and cutting; basic machining.
- Repair, rebuild, and modify components of highway equipment including diesel and gas engines, automatic and manual transmissions, and hydraulic equipment.
- Use diagnostic/testing equipment and precision measuring devices; lift heavy components safely.
