Job Summary
Highway Maintenance Workers are certified by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to operate a variety of complex or specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment. Duties include restoring and maintaining roadway surfaces, maintaining roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts, and ditches, and repairing or replacing guardrails, markers, guideposts, and fences.
Essential Qualifications- One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work; or one year as a Highway Maintenance Worker I in Nevada State service.
- Operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repair on light, medium and heavy‑duty highway maintenance equipment, including rotary snowplow, motor grader, crawler/tractor, backhoe/grade‑all, truck mounted asphalt distributor, chip spreader, cold planer, paint striper, vacuum sweeper, and culvert cleaner.
- Serve as certified operator for the certification of Highway Maintenance Worker I’s and II’s, overseeing equipment operation and providing training in safety policies.
- Install and maintain pavement markings, such as long line, solid and skip lines, and gore lines.
- Apply chip and flush seals, perform cold milling and inlays with hot asphalt, and prepare maintenance reports in the Maintenance Management System.
- Establish traffic controls using accepted methods to reroute traffic or control traffic speed and flow in maintenance areas, construction zones, and accident scenes.
- Mix and stockpile salt and sand, load lubricants into trucks, apply anti‑icing chemicals, and remove snow with dump trucks, snow plows, spreaders, and pre‑wetting equipment.
- Maintain radio contact with base stations, maintenance personnel, and law enforcement agencies, and respond to emergencies outside normal working hours following the Incident Command System protocol.
- Install, repair, and replace roadway signs and signposts, including bulbs, fixtures, sensors, and overhead panels.
- Monitor contract compliance and quality control, including testing materials and completed contractor work.
- Maintain landscaped areas and the highway right‑of‑way, prune, water, fertilize, and re‑seed grasses, and replace damaged trees and shrubs.
- Remove roadway and roadside debris, dead animals, and biohazards; respond to accidents and complete required documentation.
- Perform related duties as assigned and continue training under supervision to progress to the next level after one year of certification as a fully trained operator.
- Working knowledge of herbicide/insecticide application procedures and equipment.
- General knowledge of highway roadbed repair, surface maintenance, drainage facilities, traffic control, erosion control, snow removal, anti‑icing techniques, landscaping practices, environmental regulations, and incident command systems.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain hand and power tools for routine highway maintenance tasks and to read the Maintenance Management System Manual.

Eligible due to public sector employment. - Longevity Payments Eligibility:
Employees who have received a performance rating of “standard” or better and have completed eight or more years of continuous service are eligible for longevity pay.
