Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $19.63 to $25.40 per hour (4 hours per day, 181 days per year) with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits, and personal leave.

Note: This position begins the  school year. During the training period the trainee will be a temporary employee and will not be entitled to any benefits except FICA and Workmen's Compensation Insurance. After successful completion of the training and licensing period, the trainee will become a regular probationary employee and will be eligible for benefits.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent is preferred. Typical qualification: completion of training in school bus operations with two (2) years continuous service as a Bus Driver for the Carson City School District or equivalent experience and longevity performing bus driving duties. Bilingual preferred.

Must pass pre-employment drug screen, physical, and lift test.

This is a replacement position.

General

Job Description

Under general supervision, operate a school bus or other passenger vehicle; perform simple bus maintenance; perform related work as required. Bilingual preferred.

Experience or Training Required

Provisions of the Nevada Motor Vehicle Code and Educational Code applicable to operation of vehicles; operation of a bus and passenger vehicle; appropriate safety precautions; basic first aid.

Ability to
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and safety
  • Keep detailed records accurately
  • Monitor student passengers’ behavior and respond within general guidelines
  • Perform first aid as required
  • Operate vehicles with legal and defensive driving practices
  • Understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions
  • Establish and maintain proactive relationships with colleagues and community partners

Combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates ability to perform duties is required.

Licenses or Certificates Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate
  • Valid Nevada Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement
  • Current standard First Aid/CPR Certificate
  • Original Social Security Card
The Job Functions

Operate assigned bus or passenger vehicle on a regularly scheduled route and time schedule. May operate for special events as assigned. Perform work that is highly structured and seldom varies. Receive instructions only when unusual circumstances arise and after training perform duties without constant supervision.

Essential Job Functions
  • Drive and operate District bus or passenger vehicle, transporting students and other passengers as authorized
  • Monitor and control student behavior while riding on the school bus using set, established, documented procedures
  • Communicate with school authorities and parents regarding student behavior
  • Assist students when boarding and exiting the bus or vehicle; assist passengers when crossing streets adjacent to bus stops
  • Conduct required emergency evacuation drills
  • Transport students and other passengers on field trips, choosing best route to meet schedule
  • Inspect vehicles for safety, report deficiencies; drain air brakes; ensure vehicle cleanliness after use
  • Keep detailed records and reports as required
