Position SummaryThe Academic Coach (Tutor) supports the GEAR UP Compton program by providing individualized and group academic tutoring and mentoring to high school students. This role is vital in helping students improve their academic performance, build confidence, and prepare for college readiness, ultimately supporting the program’s goal of increasing college access and success for underserved students.
Position TypeThis is a part‑time, non‑benefited position with employment through Toro Auxiliary Partners. Employment is at‑will and may be terminated by either party at any time, with or without cause or notice.
Hourly Rate$20.00
Work Schedule and Location12–20 hours per week with flexible hours to accommodate student schedules.
Work Location:
Compton School District/CSUDH
- Provide one‑on‑one and small group tutoring in core academic subjects aligned with student needs.
- Support students in developing study skills, time management, and test‑taking strategies.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and outcomes.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and program staff to identify students’ academic needs and coordinate support services.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor, fostering motivation, self‑efficacy, and college‑going culture.
- Assist with student workshops and program events as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all program and school policies.
- Be an undergraduate student at CSUDH or another local college/university.
- Maintain good academic standing (≥2.5 cumulative GPA).
- At least one year of experience working with middle and/or high school students in tutoring or mentoring roles.
- Strong knowledge of core academic subjects, particularly in math, English, and science.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate and build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to the mission of increasing college readiness and access for underserved youth.
- Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, families, and community partners.
- Must pass livescan/fingerprinting by the program.
- Reliable transportation.
