Electrical Technician
The Electrical Technician performs advanced technical work in the maintenance, repair, calibration, and installation of a wide range of electronic equipment. This role supports engineers by distributing and maintaining laboratory test equipment, ensuring efficient operation of the electronics lab, and coordinating repair and calibration of major equipment. Under general supervision, the technician will solder PCB components, test, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate equipment in the Electronics Laboratory, including high power electronics products such as three-phase power supplies and motor drives up to approximately 8 kW.
The position offers long-term contract stability with strong potential for conversion to a direct role and significant learning and growth opportunities across multiple engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair electronic device board circuitry and perform failure investigations down to the component level.
- Perform hands-on SMT soldering and rework, including replacing microprocessors and other fine-pitch components on PCBAs.
- Provide manufacturing test support, including troubleshooting, fault isolation, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Create detailed test reports for functional and performance testing of electronic products.
- Conduct engineering and development tests, as well as detailed experimental testing, to collect design data.
- Support product testing during integration, functional, design verification, performance, and qualification testing phases.
- Install components, units, and printed circuit boards in accordance with specifications and engineering documentation.
- Fabricate parts, cables, wire harnesses, and test fixtures, and maintain all work-related equipment, passive loads, and test fixtures.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair high power electronics products such as three-phase power supplies, motor drives, and other power electronics equipment.
- Maintain and write work procedures and all related documentation for each task performed.
- Customize units and make adjustments or repairs according to written specifications and engineering requirements.
- Order and maintain inventory of replacement parts for electronic test equipment and manage warranty, service, and repair records.
- Work with vendors to obtain pricing and availability of needed parts and perform quality checks on newly delivered equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Maintain accurate records on equipment repairs, warranties, and schematics.
- Create ADCNs for minor electronics assembly rework instructions in accordance with IPC standards.
- Create engineering test and status reports to communicate progress and findings.
- Interface with customers and suppliers as needed to support troubleshooting of electronic assemblies.
- Build and set up test boxes (breakout boxes) used as hardware test stations for PCBAs, controllers, and other electrical products.
- Design and assemble test boxes by creating cable and wire harnesses, making wire connections, installing indicator buttons, installing basic instrument control panels, drilling required holes, and installing connectors.
- Support calibration, troubleshooting, and testing activities associated with test boxes and related power electronics equipment.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic device board circuitry down to the component level.
- Hands-on experience in SMT soldering and desoldering, including replacement of microprocessors and other surface-mount components.
- Demonstrated ability to perform PCB and PCBA rework in line with industry standards.
- Experience providing manufacturing test support, including troubleshooting, fault isolation, and corrective action implementation.
- Ability to create comprehensive test reports for functional and performance testing of electronic products.
- Experience conducting engineering and development tests, as well as detailed experimental testing, to collect design data.
- Capability to support integration, functional, design verification, performance, and qualification testing of electronic products.
- Skill in installing components, units, and printed circuit boards following technical specifications.
- Ability to fabricate parts, cables, wire harnesses, and test fixtures, and maintain related test equipment.
- Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing high power electronics products such as three-phase power supplies and motor drives (up to approximately 8 kW or higher).
- Competence in writing and maintaining work procedures and related documentation for technical tasks.
- Ability to customize units and perform adjustments or repairs according to written specifications.
- Experience ordering and managing inventory of replacement parts for electronic test equipment and maintaining warranty, service, and repair records.
