EDM Lead
The Wire EDM Lead Operator is responsible for set-up, programming, operation, and optimization of wire EDM machines while leading and supporting operators to ensure parts are produced safely, accurately, and on schedule. This role serves as the technical expert for wire EDM processes, driving quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement across the department.
A Day In The Life
- Lead daily wire EDM operations, including job prioritization, scheduling, and workload coordination
- Set up, program, and operate Makino wire EDM machines
- Develop and optimize wire EDM programs using CAM software and/or machine controls
- Troubleshoot machining issues related to cutting accuracy, wire breakage, surface finish, and cycle time
- Perform first-article inspections and verify conformance to prints and specifications
- Train, mentor, and support wire EDM operators so that machines run at all times
- Ensure adherence to safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies
- Collaborate with engineering, tooling, quality, and production teams to resolve issues
- Maintain documentation including setup sheets, process parameters, and inspection records
- Monitor machine maintenance needs and coordinate preventative maintenance
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to process capability, efficiency, and scrap reduction
What Will Help You Thrive In This Role?
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or apprenticeship preferred
- 5+ years of wire EDM experience, including setup and programming
- Prior leadership or lead experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of GD&T, blueprints, and inspection methods
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, CMM data)
- Experience working with tight tolerances and complex geometries
- Basic computer skills; CAM software experience a plus
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs as required
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity for precision work
Work Environment
- Manufacturing shop environment with exposure to machine noise, coolants, and electrical equipment
- Proper PPE required
