FWS Student - Work Study Writing Center Assistant
The Student Work Study Writing Center Assistant provides support for various functions at the Georgia Highlands College Writing Center. Responsibilities include understanding, supporting, and carrying out the college’s mission, vision, and values and complying with mandates and regulations of government and accrediting bodies. The role involves providing one-on-one writing consultations for students across disciplines, ensuring peers maintain ownership of their work by teaching students to recognize and correct writing skills independently, and supporting peers through all stages of the writing process: brainstorming, revising, research, editing, etc.
The position also fosters critical thinking, confidence, and writing independence, concludes each session with careful documentation, and communicates with Writing Center leadership about challenging or unique situations and documenting them when necessary. The assistant maintains and supports an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive learning environment, adapts tutoring strategies to meet the needs of individual students by respecting diverse backgrounds and learning styles, participates in required training, staff meetings, and professional development, and assists with Writing Center promotion across campuses by conducting or supporting various workshops, outreach, and classroom visits.
Required qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent and current GHC undergraduate student status with satisfactory academic progress, current-year FAFSA on file with all verifications complete, currently enrolled for at least six credit hours, and some prior experience is preferred but not required. Job-specific training will be provided.
Proposed salary is $12.00 per hour.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge and ability to operate Microsoft office software, understanding of customer service with experience, ability to follow specific directions, ability to communicate effectively and appropriately, ability to work independently on a task and utilize appropriate critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving within area of responsibility, and ability to demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
