Job Overview
Staff Nurse (Band
5) – positions available at West Cumberland Hospital and Northern Cancer Centre Carlisle. The role involves administering systemic anti‑cancer treatment and supportive therapies to patients on the chemotherapy unit. Full training and internal chemotherapy competencies will be provided. After training, you may work across both Carlisle and WCH chemotherapy sites.
Interview Date: 16 March 2026. Full‑time and part‑time vacancies. No agencies please.
Main Duties of the Job- Excellent communication skills and confidence when speaking with patients facing life‑limiting illness.
- Effective communicator with all levels of the multi‑disciplinary team.
- Passionate about caring for cancer patients and committed to continual service improvement.
- Completion of cannulation, venepuncture, and central line access with in‑house training.
- Pre‑assessment and triage upon SACT competence.
- Demonstration of Trust Values in everyday work.
- Registered nurse, knowledgeable of current professional issues.
- Desirable—completed oncology course and cancer‑patient experience (not essential).
- Accountable for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating high‑quality patient care in the Chemotherapy Suite.
- Completion of Trust training period and SACT Passport.

With around 2 million patient contacts annually, we deliver care from multiple flagship sites including Royal Victoria Infirmary, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Dental Hospital, Cramlington Manor Walks, Urgent Treatment Centres, Newcastle Fertility Centre, and the Northern Centre for Cancer Care.
DetailedJob Description and Main Responsibilities
- Accountable for assessing, planning, delivering, and evaluating high‑quality patient care in the peri‑operative environment.
- Provide effective support to patients and carers throughout their care pathway.
- Act as role model, teacher, and supervisor for junior staff and students, participating in mentor and preceptorship programmes.
- Abide by Trust policies and procedures.
- Support and deputise for nurse in charge in their absence.
- Act as patient advocate in accordance with NMC Code and HCPC standards.
- Collaborate as an effective member of the MDT.
- Participate in 24‑hour on‑call service when appropriate to role.
– Essential Criteria
- Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and ongoing professional development.
- Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context.
- Understanding/experience of adult/child safeguarding.
- Meeting NMC requirements for mentorship if relevant to role.

- Basic IT skills.
- Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty, e.g., cannulation, IV drug administration.

- Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch) / ODP.
- NMC / HCPC registration.
- Diploma/Degree in Nursing/ODP completed or willingness to undertake, or equivalent experience.
