Job Summary
Position:
Equipment Mechanic I or II (Level A16/A18) at TxDOT Atlanta District, Carthage, TX.
Salary: $40,918 – $61,130 per year for Equipment Mechanic I or $45,521 – $71,055 per year for Equipment Mechanic II.
Work Calendar: 4/10s – Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; 10 % travel required.
Location:
Carthage Maintenance Section, 861 S. Shelby Street, Carthage, TX 75633.
- Repair, maintenance, and inspection of fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment, moving related items as necessary.
- Use computerized diagnostic equipment, analyze data, and apply diagnostic results.
- Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into the fleet information management system.
- Maintain heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
- Adjust brakes, replace brake system parts (air brake, anti‑locking systems), troubleshoot electrical systems, and repair electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
- Prepare vehicles for use by ensuring safety features such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers are present and functional.
- Inspects work performed by shop mechanics or contract vendors (Equipment Mechanic II). Perform quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment (Equipment Mechanic II).
- Work independently on assignments; refer unusual issues to supervisor.
- Travel to other district or division shops within the state as needed.
- Experience:
2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. - Knowledge of electronic and mechanical components, brake systems, diesel/gasoline/CNG/LPG engines, and safety standards.
- Skill in using hand and power tools, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word), and interpreting electrical diagrams and schematics.
- Experience:
4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. - Includes all Equipment Mechanic I duties and competencies.
- Additional knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair, advanced diagnostics, and Microsoft Office.
- Skill in performing quality assurance and analysis on repaired equipment.
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience (I).
- Certificate of completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Valid driver’s license;
Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required, or to be obtained within 90 calendar days of employment.
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
- Environmental conditions (weather exposure, temperature changes).
- Noise, vibration, and exposure to outside and inside conditions.
- Medium work: lift up to 50 lb. at a time, frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lb.; stooping, kneeling, crouching required.
- Visual acuity for measurement devices, machine operation, and facility inspection.
- Physically demanding; pre‑employment physical required.
- Must pass drug test; subject to random drug testing.
- Must be available on a 24‑hour basis for emergency response; may be required to work alternate schedules during adverse weather events.
- Travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
