The Department of Anthropology at UNC
-Chapel Hill fosters an intellectually dynamic environment where diverse approaches to understanding humanity past and present coexist and intersect. Through teaching, research, curation, and professional training, the departments support scholarship across Sociocultural Anthropology, Human Biology, Ecology and Evolution, Archaeology, Medical Anthropology, and the study of Race, Difference, and Power. This interdisciplinary structure encourages collaboration across fields, engagement with campus partners, and the formation of innovative research communities focused on emerging questions and challenges.

Faculty and students explore issues such as globalization, environment and sustainability, public anthropology, cultural studies, political economy, and the relationships between people, places, and material culture. The departments maintain particular strengths in the study of North America, especially the southern United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia, while supporting research across a broad range of geographic and cultural contexts.

Established in 2008, the Curriculum in Archaeology is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program, including a major and a minor, that incorporates courses across five departments (Anthropology, Classics, Religious Studies, Art, and Linguistics). The Curriculum currently includes eighteen faculty members appointed from the departments of Anthropology, Classics, History, Religious studies, and Asian and Middle Eastern studies.

The Research Laboratories of Archaeology is an institutional center that supports research, teaching, curation, and community collaboration involving students and faculty at the University of North Carolina. Within the College of Arts and Sciences, the RLA serves as the administrative home of the Curriculum in Archaeology.
