The Roadway Design Unit is comprised of a diverse team whose primary purposes are to produce and review roadway design plans, lighting and electrical plans, and provide technical expertise on these subjects to internal and external partners.
We are looking for an Engineer II who will serve in the Design Development and Support Group.
In this position you will:
• Prepare designs for preliminary, right of way and final plans produced using sound engineering judgement to comply with AASHTO guidelines, Roadway Design Manual, Bridge Policy, NCDOT Standard Specifications and NCDOT Standard Drawings.
• Utilize Open Roads Designer, Micro Station, Project Wise and other electronic software design tools.
• Generate and review calculations of quantities of cost estimates that will be used to allocate funding for TIP projects.
• Review plans and recommendations and check final plan estimates to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Assist with the review of corridor modeling file comments to ensure that templates and design parameters match the approved design criteria.
• Respond to requests for files of TIP projects from property owners, businesses, Division and MPO’s.
• Interpret and communicate NCDOT and Roadway Design policies and procedures to private engineering firms and other NCDOT employees.
• Provide training for engineers, Engineering Associates, and interns to develop their skills.
• Attend meetings internally and externally, representing the Unit in such matters as scheduling, project design scoping, right of way issues, construction reviews, work zone safety and roadway design issues that may arise.

** Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18, $63,927 - $111,871
** Management prefers applicants with the following:
*** Knowledge of civil engineering principles, AASHTO guidance, Roadway Design Manual, Bridge Policy, and NCDOT’s Standard Drawings and Specifications.
* Experience developing and/or reviewing engineered design plans and details ensuring compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles, designs, and statutes.
* Experience working independently on tasks and tracking progress to ensure timely completion.
* Experience using Bentley highway design software and work spaces (Micro Station, Open Roads Designer, and Corridor Modeling).
* Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary staff on technical matters and training lower-level engineers.

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
