About This Role

We are currently hiring for a Mechanical Design Engineer for our Kidde Business Unit in Mebane, NC and report to the Senior Engineer.

The successful candidate must possess a strong engineering background, product development and technical leadership competencies to successfully support the Residential Fire Suppression and Signaling life safety product lines.

In this role you will carry out design engineering activities, conduct design analysis, make layouts of components, design new products, maintain existing products, and resolve design problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ownership of planning, quality, and timeliness of the Collection teams activities, including forecasting and target setting.
  • Design engineer for signaling products at Kidde.
  • Focus efforts on new product development, value engineering/cost savings, improved engineering and/or better performance of the Kidde product portfolio.
  • Strong emphasis on ideation (new ideas/solution creation), project planning, concept development and implementation of robust test plans.
  • Application of robust engineering tools e.g. rapid prototyping, DOE, FEA, CFD etc.
  • Drive DFMEA, identification of critical characteristics and best engineering practices Proactive support for Kidde manufacturing sites and partner with Operations to ensure deliverables integrate into their systems within the overall product release schedule.
  • Certification authorities for product standards and legislation e.g. Underwriters Laboratory.
  • Develop solutions through the complete product lifecycle, from initial requirements to design, implementation, test, deployment, sustaining & end‑of‑life stages.
  • Utilize CAD (Solid Works) as a tool to create 3D / 2D drawings for product develop and ideation purposes.
  • Apply product state of the art analysis tools combined with lab verification testing to create robust products.
  • Use project management skills working as part of a cross‑functional team.
  • Utilize engineering systems to maintain and manage project documentation e.g. PDXpert.
  • Makes layouts of components, calculates stack‑up of detail components, and prepares major cost studies consisting of new details and/or marked prints and all supporting documentation, when necessary, to facilitate operations and ensure that established objectives and budgets are achieved.
  • Conducts design analysis on components and/or assemblies, when required, to ensure that designs are cost efficient, manufacturable, and reliable.
  • Resolves design problems of moderate scope to ensure project completion.
  • Prepares and carries out original or adaptations to designs and design changes necessitated by inadequate tolerances, general manufacturing problems, and/or customer requirements, to ensure that completed designs meet the established specifications.
  • Designs new products and processes, and improves and maintains existing products to help create better products or processes and ensure that the current and future needs of the business are met.
  • Up to 10% including but not limited to USA and Mexico
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
  • 2+ years’ experience with manufactured products – high volume consumer and commercial goods
Preferred Qualifications
  • Mechanical/Industrial Engineer – BSME. MSME preferred
  • Engineering CAD experience, Solid Works preferred verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Competent with MS Office software
