This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position located in the Salisbury Resident Engineer’s Office in Rowan County. This position performs technical duties supporting engineers and other professionals in areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials testing, materials sampling, erosion control inspection, and construction traffic control audits on assigned projects. Work functions may include inspection for compliance and/or code; collection and analysis of field data;
testing of materials; reviewing and interpreting design plans; and analysis of engineering related data and/or product data. Duties may also include construction layout, measuring, staking, marking, and clearing brush. This position will perform other related duties as required. This position must establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. The applicant should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
Additional Expectations:
Applicants will be required to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components. Employees in this position may be exposed to high traffic volumes, may work at heights over water or traffic, and may have to climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges.
This position must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the bush axe and other tools on steep and rough terrain. This position is expected to carry testing equipment over rough and steep terrain. This position will be required to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. The successful applicant for this position is expected to safely work high above ground, be proficient in record keeping, and engineering testing equipment.
Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. This position may be required to work occasional nights and weekends and may be required to work snow/Ice events.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Safety-toed shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Skills and Abilities
/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software.
Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.

Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
