This recruitment is for two (2) UNC Police Officer positions (# & #). The main purpose of the UNC Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. Selected candidates will patrol campus, investigate complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy, develop and implement preventative patrol techniques and perform specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.
PoliceOfficer Levels
Police Officer I: Entry‑level with 0–2 years of law‑enforcement experience. Candidates must have completed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training and be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer according to the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or be able to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Police Officer II: Fully functioning officer with two or more years of experience as a sworn local, state or federal law‑enforcement officer. Candidates must have completed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training and hold at least a general certification from the NC CJETSC.
Police Officer III: Veteran officer with four or more years of sworn experience. Candidates must have completed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training and attained an intermediate certification from the NC CJETSC.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
- Probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer.
- Successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
- Out‑of‑state lateral hires must be NC CJETSC certification eligible.
- At least 20 years of age at time of appointment.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Pass an in‑depth background investigation, including driver’s history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening and physical fitness assessment.
- Successful completion of a three‑week department orientation course and a twelve‑week department field training program during the probationary period; satisfactory completion of the state‑mandated probationary period.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner.
