Functions alone and as member of a healthcare team providing assessment and care to patients with chronic medical conditions, behavioral health conditions, and substance use disorder. Identifies patient’s needs and assists in connecting patients with available community and medical resources. Participates in the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program providing those with substance use disorder medications until connected with a treatment provider.
Provides 911 Quick Response Assistance and at times of critical staffing or adverse weather conditions may be assigned to an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance for partial or entirety of assigned shift. Attend regularly scheduled public education events and can adjust presentation to age and appropriateness of audience.
As a Community Paramedic, one must attend to the physical and emotional needs and wellbeing of the patient and, when appropriate, the family and significant others of the patient. Responsibilities include patient care which incorporates assessment, stabilization, and intervention skills adhering to Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) and protocols approved by Stokes County EMS Medical Director and as established by the North Carolina Office of EMS.
The Community Paramedic will be required to use independent judgement if immediate contact when Medical Control is unavailable. A team-based approach is necessary when working with healthcare partners, other paramedics, and other agencies to provide quality patient care. The Community Paramedic must maintain necessary certifications, skills, continuing education, and competency checks as required. The Community Paramedic must maintain QRV in a ready to always respond status.
The Community Paramedic must drive vehicles according to Stokes County EMS policy as well as local and state laws. Work is performed under limited supervision and requires high self-motivation, work ethic, and attention to detail. The position is evaluated based on attainment of stated performance objectives, personal conferences, and review of records, reports, achievement levels and to the effectiveness of response to emergency situations by the employee’s supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF WORK, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
- Ability to function within the scope of a Paramedic as set forth by Stokes County EMS, the Medical Director, and the State Office of EMS.
- Research, contacts, and schedules appointments for patients enrolling in the Stokes County Community Paramedic Program following established procedures for patient intake and follow up.
- Provides appropriate, accurate, and timely documentation of assessment and care.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and projects, work independently, being self-motivated to identify and complete tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
- Responds to emergency calls in ALS QRV performing necessary assessment, treatment, and interventions with documentation of such by adherence to protocols approved by the Stokes County EMS, the Medical Director, and the State Office of EMS.
- Ability to provide direct and in-direct patient care, assisting personnel on scene and in transport to the hospital, if necessary.
- Ability to always drive emergency vehicles safely and competently and under various weather conditions in adherence to local and state laws.
- Participate in MAT program attending to those with substance use disorder by providing direct care and administration of medication until transferring care to the Stokes County Health Department or October Road Inc.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain continuing education hours as set forth by Stokes County EMS, the Medical Director, and the State Office of EMS.
- Practice professional and courteous conduct in accordance with Stokes County EMS core values to include excellence in service, professionalism, pride, and compassion for people.
