General Work Description
The primary purpose of this position is to provide health education and health coaching with a focus on prevention, harm reduction, and the promotion of healthier lifestyles. This position serves as the lead health educator and program coordinator for substance misuse prevention and harm reduction initiatives, including Prevention Point and nicotine cessation programs. Beaufort County Health Department’s Prevention Point Program is an onsite syringe exchange program that provides syringes, Narcan, and educational materials.
Working as part of the health education team, this position participates in health fairs and community events and assists with the Community Health Assessment and State of the County Health Reports. The position also serves as the backup health educator for the PREPare for Success sexual health, school-based education program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and public health education activities.
- General knowledge of modern educational theory and techniques in the field of public health education.
- General knowledge of journalistic principles and methods of preparing subject matter in the promotion of public health activities.
- General knowledge of display techniques and skill in the arrangement of exhibits.
- Ability to work effectively with people on all educational levels and to maintain effective working relationships with local health departments, community agencies, and the public.
- Ability to write and speak effectively and to stimulate interest and cooperation among various groups in carrying out a program in public health education.
Qualifications
This position is open to entry‑level candidates with at least a four‑year degree. Applicants who do not yet meet all minimum qualifications may be hired at a trainee status, allowing them to gain the required training and experience to advance to the fully qualified position.
A master’s degree in public health education or in public health with a major in public health education; or graduation from a four‑year college or university with a major in health education and two years’ experience in public health education or a related field; or graduation from a four‑year college or university and three years’ experience in public health education; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
A valid driver’s license is required.
Other Information
There may be after hours and weekend work if necessary for Health Education and Promotion programs.
