Position Summary

UNC Police Lieutenant is a first line Police Commander. Responsibilities of this position include supervisory and managerial duties in directing a Police function such as a Patrol Squad, Community Response Unit, Criminal Investigations Section, Internal Affairs, or CALEA / IACALEA Accreditation. Six Police Lieutenants report directly to a Division Commander and one Police Lieutenant reports directly to the Chief of Police.

Lieutenant duties can include management and supervision of a patrol unit, CRU, or the Criminal Investigations Section, or investigating citizen complaints, preparing Administrative Reviews, and managing the department’s compliance with law enforcement standards.

Police Lieutenants work with minimal supervision in daily managerial and administrative functions in a complex 24/7/365 work environment. Any Police Lieutenant may be required to take command of any operational situation on campus and is responsible for demonstrating command presence and managing personnel and other resources to mitigate and resolve the situation. Police Lieutenants direct the actions of any Police line personnel (Officers and Sergeants) as part of the chain of command.

All Police Lieutenants are responsible for exercising independent judgment and competencies commensurate with a Police middle management position. Police Lieutenants evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; manage criminal or internal affairs investigations, direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures.

Duties may include orientation, review, and training of officers, conducting pre-shift briefings, reviewing reports and investigations, activity coordination, supervising CALEA and IACALEA compliance, and providing input concerning operational planning.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate’s degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater.
