It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. Description Of WorkReporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager and/or Correctional Lieutenant III at a multi‑custody male correctional facility, the primary job duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Providing first‑line supervision to Correctional Officer III’s in a close‑custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing.
- Assigning lower level custody staff to post(s).
- Overseeing officer activities and performance, and ensuring that custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
- Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to departmental policy.
Salary Range: $41,206 - $72,113
Management PreferencesEffective July 1, 2025, candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the "Minimum Education and Experience" listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) listed here in this section are now to be used as "Management Preferences" and to be used to screen for the MOST QUALIFIED pool of applicants.

This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.
Minimum Education And ExperienceHigh School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of experience as a Correctional Officer,
OR two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
