Description of WorkWork in this class involves first-line supervision of Correctional Officer I’s in minimum‑custody facilities, increasing custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower‑level custody staff to a particular area or post, oversee officer activities and performance, and ensure inmates’ custody, security, and welfare are maintained. Employees arrange work schedules for shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and enforce rules and regulations according to policy.
Positions may serve as the highest ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer‑in‑Charge (OIC) and report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.
In this role at Johnston Correctional Institution in Smithfield, NC, which houses approximately 668 minimum‑custody male offenders, the Correctional Sergeant I will supervise Correctional Officer I’s in restrictive and controlled housing. Responsibilities include assigning staff, overseeing performance, protecting facility security through inspections, leading drills and emergencies, conducting searches for contraband, investigating security incidents, preparing reports, evaluating performance, and assisting in discipline.
The position may lead staff in tactical assignments and respond to emergency situations. Eligibility for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission is required.

High School or GED diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
