* This position qualifies for our UNC Health Johnston RN Incentive Program. Candidates with a BSN or higher are eligible for up to $20,000 commitment incentive for a 4 year work commitment, $15,000 commitment incentive for a 3 year work commitment, or up to $25,000 in tuition loan forgiveness. Candidates with an ADN can receive up to $16,000 commitment incentive for a 4 year work commitment, $12,000 commitment incentive for a 3 year work commitment, or up to $25,000 in tuition loan forgiveness.

Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

3rd Floor - Medical/Surgical

Third floor Johnston Health, Smithfield is a 33‑bed Medical Surgical Unit that serves primarily medical patients, although pediatric patients are seen occasionally for overnight observation. Third floor nurses will get exposure to wound/wound vac care, tube feedings and tracheostomies and will care for patients with a variety of medical diagnoses, to include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Altered Mental Status
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hypotension
  • Diabetes
  • Shortness of Breath

Full time is 3 12‑hour shifts. Our standard shifts are 0645‑1915 and 1845‑0715 with every other weekend. Holidays are rotated among staff. Each shift is staffed with a charge nurse and nurses are paired with an NA teammate to assist with care. Nurse‑to‑patient ratios on the unit are typically 1:5 or 1:6.

Responsibilities
  • Education – Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs of self. Attend education programs based on identified learning needs. With assistance, use patient education materials relevant to patient population. Assess readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers.
  • Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes. Seek guidance as needed in revision of plan of care. Participate in discussion with members of the interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care.
  • Implementation – Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, including population‑appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety aspects of care. Perform bedside point‑of‑care testing as required for patient care plan.
  • Leadership – With assistance, develop goals to promote professional growth or minimize limitations. Achieve goals and objectives within identified time frame or renegotiate with supervisor. Be knowledgeable about activities which facilitate intra‑interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. Include appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety needs. Synthesize assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication to others.
  • Planning – Collaborate with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care. Begin to use full range of communication as a means to convey planning. Identify and address cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care.
  • Research – Read journals that contain studies or articles that may be applicable to practice. Bring ideas and questions to the staff at large for assessment of applicability.
