Position: Air Awareness Coordinator (Charlotte-area)
Salary: $52,000 – $65,000 (exempt, salaried)
Funding: Position is funded by the North Carolina Division of Air Quality and is subject to grant renewal.

Work Type: This is an exempt, salaried position. Pay rates are determined by education, skill, experience level, internal equity, salary history, and market rate.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement community-wide programs that reduce air pollution.
- Engage community members on air quality issues through presentations, school visits, and participation in community events, many of which are scheduled during lunch hours, evenings and weekends.
- Build relationships with a network of regional partners (both public and private) who have a common interest in air quality awareness and assist them with implementing pollution reduction strategies.
- Design effective communication materials including graphics, reports, promotional materials, and webpages.
- Respond to air quality‑related inquiries from Mecklenburg County residents.
- Review field inspection reports and assign and monitor follow‑up corrective and enforcement actions and plans.
- Investigate complaints concerning suspected violations of environmental laws, rules and regulations.
- Coordinate and participate in enforcement actions with external agencies.
- Draft, prepare, and review reports, correspondence and other documents concerning complaints and enforcement activities.
- Consult with management, other governmental agencies and industry representatives on environmental matters.
- Develop data processing applications involving databases and spreadsheets to compile, inventory, and manage field testing, sampling and investigations data.
- Order field equipment and supplies used in conducting field sampling, testing and investigations.
- Provide technical guidance and may schedule, assign, train and oversee the work of others.
- Conduct field tests, sampling, and investigations to assess the natural environment and to determine sources and methods for controlling pollutants in air, water and soil.
- Perform public education and outreach activities in various settings such as the field, office or classroom environments.
- Assist with the preparation of grant applications to fund environmental programs as directed.
- Operate environmental monitoring equipment, following quality controls and good laboratory practice (GLP).
Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences with coursework in communication, marketing, or education is ideal.
Experience
:
Minimum of two years of experience. A combination of relevant education and experience is acceptable.
Licenses and Certifications
:
- Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License.
- County Driving Privileges.
- Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required.
Preferred Qualifications
:
- Fluent in Spanish (speak, read, write).
- Communication, education, or marketing experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
:
- Environmental assessment and pollution control principles, practices, and methods.
- Field testing, sampling and investigation techniques and procedures.
- Federal, state and local environmental laws, rules and regulations.
- Maintaining field monitoring and data equipment.
- Conducting field observations.
- Preparing reports.
- Collecting field samples.
- Organizing, evaluating, and acting upon observations identified in the field.
- Applied learning: assimilating and applying new job‑related information promptly.
- Business acumen: using economic, financial, market and industry data to understand and improve business results.
- Collaboration:
working effectively and cooperatively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships. - Communication: clearly conveying information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience.
- Computer skills: proficiency in applicable computer programs.
Works outdoors and may be exposed to weather conditions.
