Overview

The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections (NCDAC) is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This position is within the Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) and is part of the Coastal Regional Maintenance Team’s Electrical Systems Team. The Maintenance/Construction Technician III (Regional Maintenance Technician) will operate with a duty station at the Coastal Regional Maintenance Yard in Greenville, NC, performing electrical systems preventive maintenance and like-in-kind Force Account system replacements.

Responsibilities

• Complete electrical systems preventive maintenance and like-in-kind Force Account system replacements for facilities within the region.
• Read and interpret blueprints and electrical schematics.
• Work independently to complete assignments received from a supervisor.
• Perform construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronics facility systems, equipment, and machinery as a journeyman-level technician.
• Travel as needed to meet organizational demands, including occasional weekend work and overnight travel.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart

/ Competencies

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates meet minimum qualifications based on education and experience. The knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement may be used as management preferences to screen for the most qualified applicants.

Management Preferences:

  • Demonstrated journeyman-level experience in electrical and/or electronics trades.
  • Experience installing primary and secondary electrical conduit and circuitry for electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience with standard testing equipment to diagnose electrical components.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC) and/or NFPA standards.
  • Experience reading schematics and blueprints.

Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) oversees capital projects, maintenance, and support services to ensure compliance with building codes, regulations, and mandates while supporting rehabilitation and reentry goals through offender job training in construction and maintenance trades. DECM provides architectural/engineering support, project management, and sustainability initiatives to statewide facilities. Our maintenance efforts cover plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and related systems, including telecommunications, intrusion systems, fencing, cameras, fire alarms, and energy management.
