Facilities Maintenance Mechanic

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic performs a wide range of repair, construction, and maintenance duties across Cary facilities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Responding to work requests, diagnosing problems, and performing necessary repairs.
• Performing preventative maintenance on plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and building systems.
• Handling maintenance issues such as plumbing leaks, clogged drains, and repairing and installing plumbing fixtures.
• Checking the function of boilers, chillers, valves, and HVAC components.
• Inspecting facilities and playgrounds to ensure compliance with ADA and National Playground Safety Institute (NPSI) requirements.
• Coordinating the closing of playgrounds for repairs and new equipment installation, and ordering relevant equipment.
• Handling warranty repairs on playground equipment.
• Training other employees in trades and safety procedures.
• Maintaining knowledge of trades and procedures through training classes.
• Assisting with electrical equipment installations and upgrades, including switching, outlets, lighting, and appliances.
• Performing carpentry renovations, including walls, floors, doors, and ceilings.
• Applying stains, weatherproofing, and paint to interior and exterior surfaces.
• Providing technical support for setup, takedown, and cleanup of Cary events.
• Collecting cost information to provide accurate quotes and recording work order data.
• Installing and repairing fences as needed and consulting with outside contractors.
• Assisting other divisions and conducting specialized training in lock‑out/tag‑out and electrical safety.
• Arranging training opportunities and assisting compliance with lock‑out/tag‑out and electrical safety.
• Performing research for maintenance requirements, ordering and maintaining specialty equipment and supplies.
• Leading small projects, planning schedules, and providing cost projections to Facilities Team Leaders.
• Overseeing or leading the work of personnel performing work, handling special projects, and inspecting contractors.
• Locating parts, materials, and supplies needed for maintenance operations, inspecting the work of contracted service providers, and handling special maintenance or repair projects.
• Managing accountability of equipment and tools, ensuring secure facilities, and responding to emergency and after‑hour calls.
• Transporting specialized equipment, making keys, and repairing locks.
• Responding to public and staff inquiries and providing accurate work order data.
• Participating in hazardous weather or emergency response.
• Performing other job‑related tasks as required.

Considerable knowledge of building trade principles—including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC—is required, along with proficiency with hand and power tools, materials, and general construction equipment. Safety practices across trades, the ability to follow oral and written instructions, work effectively in a team environment, establish and maintain relationships with staff and the public, communicate clearly, lead a small team, and perform manual labor for extended periods of time are essential.

Work requires medium to heavy physical effort, exposure to varied environmental conditions, and the ability to move freely—including climbing stairs and ladders, walking long distances, and lifting moderate to heavy loads. Adequate visual acuity, hearing, speech, and smell are also needed.

• High school graduation and at least 5 years of experience in one or more building trades.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• National Incident Management System (NIMS) training:
  Certified in NIMSICS 100 and certified or trained in NIMSIC 700 (provided by the employer).
• Drug testing and background check, which may include criminal record, education verification, and credit history review.
