Performs intermediate skilled trades work in the construction, maintenance and repair of public buildings, grounds, equipment, related facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Building/Grounds Maintenance Supervisor/Assistant Maintenance Supervisor and Department Director.

Participates in a wide variety of building maintenance and repair tasks involving one or more of the trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting, and electrical work.

Performs electrical tasks; repairs and maintains interior and exterior lighting; installs and replaces electrical fixtures; installs and repairs switches and outlets. Performs carpentry tasks in the repair, remodel, and/or replacement of building structures; hangs, replaces, or repairs walls, cabinets, doors, windows, floors, ceilings, etc.; fabricates or builds parts needed for repairs; handles locks and key issues.

Performs plumbing tasks; fixes and repairs water lines and leaks; replaces pneumatic valves and sprinkler heads; cleans out waste lines and drain lines; repairs, maintains and changes plumbing fixtures. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units; repairs and maintains boilers; inspects generators to ensure they are working properly.

Conducts inspections on fire alarms and exit lights.

Operates dump trucks, tractors, backhoe, front end loader, forklift, chainsaw, weed eater, stump grinder, etc. in the construction, maintenance, and repair of facilities. Performs ground maintenance tasks; mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats, trims trees and shrubs, sprays pesticides; removes leaves and debris; cleans parking lots; removes snow and ice; removes downed trees.

Performs work based upon schedules, and work plans; prepares and maintains maintenance records as required.

Tests voting machines to ensure proper functioning; delivers, sets up, and removes voting equipment.

Sets up rooms and facilities; moves furniture.

Works under the Buildings & Grounds Maintenance Supervisor/Assistant Maintenance Supervisor.

Supervision Given:

The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the General public.
