DescriptionThe primary purpose of the Johnston County Department of Social Services (JCDSS) is to provide mandatory and non-mandated programs and services to citizens of Johnston County. JCDSS is responsible for providing Child Protective Services, Foster Care and Adoptions, LINKS, ICPC, Services for Adults and Disabled individuals, Adult Protective Services, Guardianship, determining eligibility for Public Assistance (TANF, Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, LIEAP, Crisis Intervention, Daycare, General Assistance) and a full range of social and support services to eligible recipients.
Johnston County Department of Social Services has an immediate opening for a Social Work Supervisor III – Child Protective Services Unit. Preference will be given to applicants with prior Child Welfare experience and/ or completion of mandatory Child Welfare training within the last 3 years. Johnston County Department of Social Services is seeking a Family Centered, policy driven Child Protective Services (CPS) Supervisor to supervise a unit of CPS Investigators. The primary purpose of this position is to supervise a staff whose duty is to keep children under the age of 18, safe by investigating allegations of abuse, neglect and dependency, front load services and monitor compliance of services that will enable parents to provide a nurturing environment for their children when the case is closed.
The supervisor will serve as a second level decision maker regarding the next steps in case decision through the current process when removal of children from their parents/caregivers home is necessary. The supervisor will assign CPS reports daily after reviewing the report and ensure that the case is assigned and initiated within the required timeframe. Monitor the work or staff through weekly or as needed case reviews, progress reports, conferences, informal discussions and coaching sessions to assure compliance with operational standards and established policies.
Review and ensure that documentation and day sheets are completed timely, as per policy. Provide on-the-job training for staff and arrange for staff to receive formal training when needed and offered. Train staff, assist with resolving problems and ensure that the qualified services are being provided. Supervisors may provide input to higher-level management on administrative, personal and budget issues. This position will need to attend court and rotate after-hours on call with other supervisors.
This position would have altered hours, when/if the county operated emergency shelters as this is a mandatory duty of DSS and all staff must participate, as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of methods and principles of casework supervision and training, considerable knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and community problems, considerable knowledge of behavioral and socio‑economic problems and their treatment and governmental and private organizations and community resources. Considerable knowledge of the laws, regulations, and policies, which govern social work programs. Must possess the ability to supervise, train/orient lower‑level social workers, students, interns, or other staff.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.
Education and Experience
Master’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience.
