Summary

The Education Instructor teaches courses according to need in the Education Department for students majoring in elementary education, secondary education and/or early childhood education. This position will primarily teach courses in Early Childhood Education and contribute to the Elementary Education curriculum as needed. The successful candidate will also advise students, assist in recruiting efforts, and participate in various departmental duties as needed, including the NAEYC accreditation process.

The instructor will provide both face-to-face instruction and distance learning courses and demonstrate strong skills in online course design and instruction.

Responsibilities
  • The successful candidate will provide instruction in Early Childhood Education courses, primarily including Introduction to Early Childhood, Infant and Toddler Care, and Guidance of Young Children, and in Elementary Education courses as needed, such as Literature for Children and Educational Assessment. The faculty member will be required to meet all scheduled classes prepared to provide instruction; prepare teaching syllabi for courses of study;

    prepare materials to adequately evaluate student progress; report midterm and final grades when appropriate; maintain accurate and adequate records; establish regular office hours for student consultation. The faculty member performs other related duties as assigned, which duties include but are not necessarily limited to advising students on academic curricula; serving on faculty committees; participating in faculty meetings; providing recommendations for preparation of departmental or school budgets;

    participating in the development of departmental curricula; and adhering to all institutional policies.

  • Supervise and coordinate the NAEYC accreditation process, including maintaining required documentation, leading faculty in data collection and analysis, and ensuring alignment of course content and assessments with NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies.

  • Maintain and facilitate an Early Childhood Advisory Group to support program development and accreditation goals.

  • Teach a full range of early childhood and education courses, with exact course assignments determined by the strengths of the candidate and departmental needs.

  • Meet all scheduled classes prepared to provide effective instruction; maintain regular office hours for student consultation and advising.

  • Incorporate appropriate technology and active learning strategies into all modes of instruction.

  • Serve on college committees, participate in faculty meetings, assist with departmental budgeting, and contribute to curriculum development as assigned.

  • Prepare syllabi, lesson plans, and instructional materials that align with accreditation standards and course outcomes.

  • Collaborate with community educational sites to support experiential student learning opportunities.

  • Evaluate and report student progress, including midterm and final grades through Moodle.

  • Utilize active learning strategies to assist the learner in meeting the course objectives.

  • Remain current in the field by reading professional literature, participating in conferences, and engaging in professional development related to early childhood education, teacher preparation, and online pedagogy.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the Administration, School or Department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Early Childhood Education, or Elementary Education with 18+ credit hours in Early Childhood Education

  • Minimum of 3 years experience teaching in an Elementary Education or Early Childhood setting

  • Must meet Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements prior to employment

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and student success

  • Strong skills in online course design and instruction

  • Commitment to the mission of community colleges

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate level, particularly in Early Childhood or Elementary Education.

  • Experience with NAEYC accreditation or similar program-level accreditation processes.

  • Experience maintaining partnerships or advisory groups in support of early childhood programs.

  • Candidates qualified through the Higher Learning Commission to teach in more than one academic discipline.

Work Environment

Typical work environment is a classroom and office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Work is typically performed during the normal workday; however, occasional early morning, late evening and weekend work may be required. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Employee must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use a computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required.
