Summary

The Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences leads the college’s strategic vision, mission, and goals. The Dean oversees academic departments and activities, fosters a positive teaching and learning environment, and promotes instructional excellence. The Dean reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and supports college administration.

Responsibilities

The Dean provides educational and professional support to faculty, staff, and students. The role manages school operations, coordinates programs and departments, oversees budgeting and financial resources, and engages internal and external stakeholders. The Dean represents the school to community and state groups and advances strategic planning for the school.

Essential Duties Academic Leadership
  • Present a positive image of the college and school at community and state events.
  • Commit to the mission of the college and the strategic plan.
  • Model adaptability, teamwork, problem solving, and responsibility in a learner‑centered environment.
  • Communicate information, plans, and projects with all constituents in multiple formats and forums.
  • Foster collaboration and build broad alignment across diverse stakeholders to advance school and institutional goals.
  • Provide innovative leadership in the design and continuous improvement of the school’s academic departments, related programs, and services.
  • Respect and encourage acceptance of diversity.
  • Support a welcoming, supportive, and respectful environment.
  • Commit to the nature and role of open enrollment.
  • Work with students, faculty, and staff to resolve issues and complaints.
  • Maintain current knowledge of higher education topics and developments.
  • Use feedback to improve the school’s operation.
  • Assess school needs in relation to overall instructional programs.
  • Participate as a member of assigned councils and committees.
  • Seek or maintain specialized accreditation as appropriate.
Academic Management
  • Assist the Vice President of Academic Affairs regarding instructional services, activities, needs, and issues.
  • Ensure school operations align with college policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ensure timely completion of program reviews to ensure the viability of academic programs.
  • Establish school committees and advisory boards as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development of marketing strategies leading to program recognition and growth.
  • Initiate and maintain third‑party contracts in accordance with college policy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Operationalize student enrollment plan within the school.
  • Develop and administer school budgets.
  • Track faculty loads, reassignments, and overloads.
  • Work with academic departments to develop adjunct faculty pools to meet school needs.
  • Manage facilities in collaboration with applicable campus personnel.
  • Maintain current knowledge of higher education laws and regulations.
  • Involve appropriate internal and external stakeholders in the school’s decision‑making processes.
  • Coordinate activities and professional development for faculty and staff.
Curricular
  • Promote excellence in teaching and advising.
  • Lead faculty and staff efforts to prepare students for academic success.
  • Facilitate academic partnerships and articulations.
  • Coordinate program and class schedules.
  • Monitor enrollment, cancel, and add classes as appropriate.
  • Ensure the academic catalog accurately reflects current academic programs.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in a discipline taught within the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Three years of higher education teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets, supervise personnel, build teams, and lead effective project management.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating an atmosphere of collegial decision‑making with diverse constituencies.
  • Evidence of commitment to support and respect for diverse populations.
  • Experience with enrollment management, curriculum or program development, or program assessment.
