Purpose StatementThe Special Education Specialist (JC554) provides a wide variety of administrative and educational support to the assigned administrator and department, establishes and ensures compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines, maintains special education records, coordinates special education meetings, reviews IEP paperwork, observes special education students, substitutes in classrooms, and creates, compiles, and distributes materials and reports.
Essential Functions- Assists in coordination of programs and activities such as meetings with parents and transfers of incoming students’ special education documents to ensure compliance with established guidelines.
- Communicates with internal and external parties—including district staff, other schools, state and federal agencies, and the general public—to provide information, facilitate communication, and offer direction.
- Compiles data from multiple sources using software tools (e.g., scanning and uploading signature forms, confidential reports, records from other schools, agency letters, evaluations) to determine accuracy and completeness of all special education processes and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Coordinates, schedules, and collaborates on special education meetings (Annual IEP, eligibility/re‑evaluation, manifestation determination, and other meetings as directed) to meet federal, state, and district timelines and procedures.
- Provides educational support in the classroom by substituting for certificated staff during IEP/MDA meetings or other special education meetings with students, parents, and staff to support student learning.
- Maintains database files and records, both confidential and non‑confidential, compiling pertinent information in the assigned area to ensure document accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Prepares special education data reports to confirm that all district, state, and federal regulations and requirements are met.
- Provides review, analysis, and feedback on complex special education procedures and processes to document history and ensure compliance.
- Responds to inquiries from internal and external parties to provide information, facilitate communication, and/or give direction.
- Reviews MDA/IEP paperwork to confirm all forms are accurate and complete, meeting federal, state, and district regulations.
- Serves as a classroom substitute—certificated staff release to attend IEP/MDA meetings, parent conferences, etc.—to support student learning.
Performs related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Education & CertificationsEducation: Community College and/or Vocational School degree with study in job related area.

- 7–10 Years = Step 6 ($21.65)
