Tests and inspects products at various stages of production. Processes, compiles and evaluates statistical data to determine and maintain quality and reliability of products. Monitor and evaluate individual weld tests. Support the use of Welding Procedure Specifications throughout the production process. This is all completed by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProperly evaluate customer standards, determine testing procedures, and choose equipment to be used by reading specifications and any special product requirements, engineering prints, work orders, test manuals, etc.
Confer with Engineers, Production personnel and the Quality Assurance Manager regarding blueprints, testing procedures, and communicates results to prevent and resolve quality assurance problems.
Perform dimensional inspection of items such as but not limited to proper fit-ups, root gaps, bores, assemblies, sub-assemblies, piece parts, angles, and critical inspection points before and after welding. Utilize print as a reference to ensure that items listed above are accurate and correct by using proper measuring devices. Sign off inspection in audit sheets and logbook.
Approve materials by comparing the Material Test Reports (MTR) to material specifications requirements. Approval of MTR is completed by the Quality Assurance Technician's signature on the Material Issue Tickets. Do not sign MTR itself.
Perform visual inspection of fabricated items regarding welding, painting, material, prints, body construction sheets, etc.
Operate ultra-sonic, magnetic particle testing equipment and dye-penetrant, to verify integrity of welds according to specifications. Analyze test results and compare them with specifications, make supervisors aware of defective welds, record and process test data as required.
Calibrate test instruments according to specifications.
Exercise technical authority over work in process to ensure it meets specified standards of quality.
Always comply with all applicable safety guidelines by correcting hazards, informing the supervisor, or recommending guidance to a coworker(s) to avoid injury to an employee or damage to equipment.
Comply with applicable company policies and tool check-out procedures in all areas of the shop including the welder test area.
Administer internal reclassification and new-hire welding tests, grades and evaluates results for recommendations to production supervision on placement of welders.
Demonstrate efficient knowledge of all welding processes and settings, such as but not limited to: FCAW, GMAW, GMAW-Pulse, GTAW, SMAW, and Air-Arcing. Solid knowledge and experience with S-500 power-wave platform welding machines. Ability to act as a trainer for the power-wave and/or any other welding process used o, answer questions that the welder may have about the welding machines and their proper use.
Understanding the development of Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) for the development of Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) per AWS D1.1 and other codes as needed. Perform related work as required.
