Utility Worker I: no experience required – starting pay $22.21
Utility Worker II: for candidates who meet all requirements – starting pay $24.43

Schedule

Monday – Friday schedule with on-call rotation.

Water Distribution Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintenance activities such as installing, repairing, cleaning, and replacing curb stops, fire hydrants, valves, and repairs to water mains and service lines.
  • Act as the operator and maintenance assistant for water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater systems, including operation of standard light and heavy utility maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Cleaning and maintaining pumping stations, checking and replacing pump lubrication and packing, cleaning and replacing filters.
  • Reading, testing, installing, repairing, cleaning, opening, closing, and replacing curb stops, manholes, pipelines, fire hydrants, valves, meters, meter vaults and boxes, pumps, and other related equipment.
  • Drive and operate construction and maintenance equipment including dump trucks, snowplows, backhoes, front loaders, hydroexcavators, jet/vac trucks, trenchers, compressors, jack hammers, concrete saws, and conduct CCTV inspections.
  • Inspect, clean, and repair sewage and storm lifts stations, wastewater and stormwater manholes, mains, lines, and laterals; cut and remove roots from sewer mains using jet/vac trucks and associated equipment.
  • Identify equipment needs for each assigned project and maintain light equipment and tools to perform utility maintenance activities.
  • Perform minor repairs on tools and equipment, report major repair needs, check and adjust fluid levels, grease and lubricate parts as required.
  • Serve standby duty after hours and on weekends for water and sewer service emergencies; assist with snow removal as needed.
  • Represent the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
Knowledge (Entry Level)
  • Operation, maintenance, and repair requirements of tools and power-driven equipment.
  • Basic utility infrastructure and maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Applicable tools and equipment utilized in the trade.
  • Safe work practices.
Abilities (Entry Level)
  • Demonstrate the City of Casper core values.
  • Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
  • Respond to callouts after hours, weekends and holidays within 20 minutes.
  • Be flexible with assignments that may change.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Operate a variety of power-driven equipment.
  • Perform a variety of utility construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions and direction.
  • Learn procedures, methods, and materials used in utility construction and maintenance work.
  • Learn and follow all laws, ordinances, and rules involved in utility equipment and operations.
  • Learn to assess problems in the field and take corrective action.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Perform manual labor.
  • Use and care for applicable tools and equipment.
  • Operate modern office equipment, software, and operating systems/applications.
  • Read and interpret utility mapping, plans, specifications, and other technical drawings.
  • Understand the general function, operation, maintenance, and repair requirements of utility systems and related components including pumps, valves, motors, lift stations, and water storage tanks.
Skills (Entry Level)
  • Operate in a courteous, knowledgeable, and tactful manner with staff and the general public.
  • Oral and written communication sufficient to exchange or convey effective information and receive work direction.
  • Operate modern office equipment, software, and operating systems/applications.
