As an Automotive Technician, your day starts at 8:00 a.m. with assignments from the Fleet Service Writer. You’ll diagnose, service, and repair a variety of City vehicles and equipment, keeping our fleet safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community.
The work includes everything from light- to medium-duty vehicles, such as police vehicles, half-ton trucks, and sedans, to equipment such as mowers, tractors, and skid steers.
You’ll work in a great team environment with a well-equipped shop featuring heated floors to keep you comfortable during the winter months. Technicians are required to provide their own tools.
The ideal candidate will have outstanding customer service and knowledge pertaining to engines, drive trains, heating and air conditioning systems, and servicing.
The hours of operation are from 8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.Incumbents are responsible for performing routine preventative maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment in the Municipal Fleet.
REPORTING STRUCTURE:Receives direct supervision from higher-level supervisory and management staff.
Knowledge of:
- Customer Service principles.
- Proper use of basic tools and equipment.
- Basic engine repair techniques.
- Basic automotive maintenance and repair principles and practices.
- Basic welding techniques.
- Basic recording keeping principles and practices.
- Safety procedures.
Ability to:
- Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Use a variety of basic tools and equipment.
- Develop skills in welding.
- Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
- Become proficient in all equipment, machinery and/or software required to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Learn diagnostic devices utilized in identifying vehicle and/or equipment malfunctions.
- Learn the operation and care of hydraulic equipment.
- Learn the operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of City-owned light and heavy equipment.
- Learn the methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
- Learn to accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Follow written and verbal instructions and direction.
- Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
Skill in:
- Maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment.
- Detecting and diagnosing basic vehicle and equipment malfunctions.
- Reading and comprehending technical repair manuals.
- Maintaining records.
- Utilizing applicable tools and equipment of the trade.
- Operating modern office equipment, software, and operating systems/applications.
- Operating hand and power tools.
- Operating in a courteous, knowledgeable and tactful manner with staff and general public.
- Oral and written communication sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required.
- Six months of experience performing automotive maintenance and repair work.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Wyoming driver’s license preferred.
