Town of Castle Rock, Colorado — Deputy Town Attorney
Under the general guidance of the Town Attorney, the Deputy Town Attorney serves as a key legal leader for the organization, providing high-level counsel on complex and high-impact municipal matters. This role works both independently and in close partnership with the Town Attorney to advise Town Council, executive leadership, departments, and boards on a broad range of issues, including land use, contracts, governance, employment, public safety, constitutional law, and municipal code development and enforcement.
In addition to hands-on legal work, this position supervises and mentors assistant town attorneys, fosters a collaborative and client-focused legal advising team, and may serve as Acting Town Attorney when needed. The role offers the opportunity to lead, influence, and make a meaningful impact across all facets of municipal government.
Responsibilities- Provide high-level counsel on complex and high-impact municipal matters, advising Town Council, executive leadership, departments, and boards on a broad range of issues including land use, contracts, governance, employment, public safety, constitutional law, and municipal code development and enforcement.
- Supervise and mentor assistant town attorneys; foster a collaborative and client-focused legal advising team; may serve as Acting Town Attorney when needed.
- Lead, influence, and contribute to meaningful impact across all facets of municipal government.
- Advise leadership proactively, manage risk thoughtfully, and translate complex legal issues into practical guidance that supports organizational goals.
- Help build and improve legal processes, mentor staff, and serve as a trusted partner across departments.
- Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Colorado.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience as a practicing attorney, including at least five (5) years of municipal or local government law.
This role calls for a confident advisor who can manage complex matters, guide projects from start to finish, and mentor developing attorneys to become stronger client counselors. The successful candidate is collaborative, decisive, and comfortable advising executives and elected officials, while building a high-performing, well-organized legal advising team in a fast-paced municipal environment.
