Community Safety Volunteer

Join the Community Safety Volunteer (CSV) Program and work alongside the Sheriff’s Office to support sworn deputies and civilian staff. As a CSV, you’ll help enhance the safety and security of our neighborhoods while gaining experience in public safety and law enforcement.

You’ll Do as a CSV

As a Community Safety Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role by:

  • Assisting with public events and community outreach programs
  • Supporting neighborhood safety and crime-prevention initiatives
  • Helping with administrative and operational tasks
  • Serving as the extra “eyes and ears” of the Sheriff’s Office to promote safety and awareness

Essential Job Functions – Administrative Team

All Administrative Community Safety Volunteers are expected to:

  • Understand and uphold the CSV program's mission and purpose
  • Serve as role models for CSV Academy participants and applicants
  • Participate in at least one unit of instruction during the CSV Academy
  • Act as the “eyes and ears” of the Sheriff’s Office
  • Support at least two community service events per year
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with integrity
  • Ability to clear a minimal medical exam
Essential Job Functions – Patrol Team

For those volunteering on the Patrol Team, additional duties include:

  • Conducting patrols of neighborhoods, schools, and roadways to extend the presence of the Sheriff’s Office
  • Assisting deputies with non-commissioned tasks such as cold reports, impounds, and lost/found property
  • Participating in CSV Patrol Team activities to maintain team readiness and skill levels
  • Executing tasks in a manner that prioritizes the safety of all involved
  • Working independently while seeking opportunities to assist within authorized responsibilities
  • Ability to clear a more in-depth medical exam
Ongoing Commitment

After graduating from the CSV academy, CSVs must maintain an average of 16 service hours per month
, calculated over a three-month period. This ensures consistent and reliable support for the Sheriff’s Office and the community while maintaining a trained skillset.

Training Requirement

All accepted applicants must complete the Community Safety Volunteer Academy
, held March
May 2026
, with a total of 100 training hours
.

Schedule
:

  • Tuesday and Thursday Evenings
    , plus four Saturday sessions during the academy period.
  • This comprehensive training prepares volunteers to serve safely and effectively.
  • Applicants interested in the Patrol Team position must complete the academy before conducting Patrol Team functions
Education &

Minimum Requirements
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required; some college coursework preferred
  • Ability to pass qualifying exams and a thorough background investigation
  • Basic computer skills and keyboarding proficiency
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Willingness to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Special Note for Applicants

This is a volunteer role
, not a paid position. Applicants should be motivated by a desire to serve their community and must be ready to commit to both the academy training and ongoing service requirements.

Additional Information

In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required.

In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
