General Duties

Performs a variety of duties related to Victim Assistance Guidelines. Will work with officers and other law enforcement advocates to contact victims of crime to offer support, information, counseling and resources as a Victim Assistance Advocate.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Respond to victims of crime
  • Help victims regain their physical and emotional well-being by means of crisis intervention and advocacy.
  • Assess the needs of victims and make the appropriate referrals.
  • Provide for the rights of victims as indicated in the Colorado Constitutional Amendment giving victims rights.
  • Provide for death notifications as requested by the Coroner's Office or other requesting agency.
Education / Experience /

Minimum Requirements
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Make a one (1) year commitment.
  • Complete the application process, which includes an interview, criminal history/background check, and polygraph.
  • Attend 40 hours of initial training.
  • Attend one evening meeting per month.
  • Be on call three (3) shifts a month and respond within one hour if called out.
  • Have reliable, insured transportation and a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to cope with emotional and stressful situations.
  • Access to email and mobile phone.
Special Requirements
  • Able to pass background investigation.
  • Basic understanding of computer programs and keyboarding.
  • Good general physical and mental condition.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Able to multitask.
  • Able to handle confidential materials and records.
  • Interview with Bureau Chief.

    Ability to utilize and understand a variety of computer systems; e-mail access preferred.

    Controls personal emotional responses and acts appropriately under high levels of emotional stress; demonstrates sensitivity to feelings of others; listens with empathy and displays compassion to those in distress; controls personal aggressive responses and acts in a manner calculated to calm volatile persons.
  • Legal Knowledge:
    Full knowledge of Colorado constitutional amendment giving victim's rights; ability to testify in court; able to explain the intricacies of the investigative and court process to victims; understand the victim compensation programs.
  • Mental Abilities:
    Ability to reason and apply logic in a multi-tasking environment; comprehend and process new information quickly and accurately; retain relevant information.
  • Public Interaction:
    Ability to interact with diverse groups and cultures in a complex society.
  • Social

    Skills:

    Establishes and maintains effective relationships with peers, supervisors and the public; has an open, non-judgmental attitude towards victims regardless of circumstances.
  • Vehicle Operation:
    Operates and owns vehicle for response purposes.
  • Verbal

    Skills:

    Speaks the English language clearly and converses effectively with persons of divergent ethnic, cultural and educational backgrounds.
  • Written Communication and Data Entry:
    Prepares reports documenting own observations and actions; statements of victims, witnesses, and suspects; writes legibly using acceptable grammar, punctuation and spelling; ensures accuracy of information.

NOTE: The successful applicant must be able to perform ALL the above job functions, unassisted, and at a pace and level of performance consistent with actual job requirements.
