The Editor, Magazines & Content Strategy provides senior editorial leadership for INFORMS and oversees the organization’s flagship magazines, OR/MS Today and Analytics, as the primary vehicles for advancing INFORMS’ brand, mission, and member engagement.
This role owns editorial vision, narrative coherence, and content prioritization across platforms, ensuring that all published content supports organizational goals, reflects INFORMS’ values, and tells a clear, compelling story about the profession and the impact of operations research and analytics. The position works cross‑functionally to align print, digital, web, podcast, and member communications into a unified content strategy.
The position works directly with committees, members, vendors, public relations, membership, and other departments within INFORMS to plan, conceptualize, solicit, and research articles and communications, such as conferences, awards, and initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities- Provides senior editorial leadership and content strategy for INFORMS, working with the Director of Marketing to oversee the overarching editorial narrative, content priorities, and quality standards, with OR/MS Today and Analytics serving as the organization’s flagship magazines.
- Establishes annual and issue‑level editorial themes in coordination with leadership, the Magazine Editorial Advisory Board (MEAB), Marketing, and other departments, ensuring alignment with INFORMS’ strategic goals, brand framework, and organizational values.
- Exercises editorial judgment regarding what content INFORMS produces, amplifies, repurposes, or deprioritizes across platforms, using professional judgment and engagement data to guide decisions.
- Oversees editorial planning, story development, author engagement, and production schedules for OR/MS Today and Analytics, ensuring timely, high‑quality print and digital magazine content.
- Focuses on high‑value editorial work, including story framing, mentoring and developing contributing writers and editors, shaping sensitive or high‑impact content, and writing select columns or features as needed.
- Leads per‑issue planning and coordination with marketing, design, and production partners to identify content, visual needs, and cross‑promotional opportunities with other INFORMS initiatives.
- Establishes and maintains editorial and style standards (AP Style, INFORMS style guide) and provides selective editing and final editorial review for the magazines and other high‑visibility materials.
- Oversees editorial priorities and judgment for informs.org homepage content and collaborates with Marketing and digital staff on execution.
- Manages operational aspects of the magazines, including advertising coordination, vendor relationships, and budget planning and monitoring, and collaborates with the sales team as appropriate.
- Writes Inside Story column and other features, departments, surveys, or news items as needed.
- Proofreads all content for accuracy and adherence to Associated Press (AP) stylebook and magazine standards.
- Advises on emerging best practices and technologies in publishing, content delivery, distribution, and discoverability.
- Bachelor's or advanced degree or equivalent in Communications, Journalism, or related field, master’s preferred.
- Experience with scientific society publications is preferred.
- Flexibility to travel 2‑3 times per year.
Ability to remain mobile throughout event spaces and perform required tasks for extended periods, with the stamina to work longer hours during conferences as needed. Mobility may be achieved with or without assistive devices, provided the essential job functions can be performed with reasonable accommodation.
