Job Description

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System. The College is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA and serves students in Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County.

The purpose of this position is to provide clinical instruction and supervision to students enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program in the School of Health Professions. The Staff Dentist primarily focuses on instruction and supervision in the areas of local anesthesia and radiographs.

• Provide clinical instruction and supervision to Dental Hygiene students.
• Focus instruction and supervision on local anesthesia and radiographs.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting the agency or state government in emergency events as declared by the Governor.

• Current Virginia license to practice as a dentist.
• Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD).
• Up-to-date continuing educational compliance.
• At least two years of clinical experience.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
• On-time attendance and submission of required documentation.
• Ability to plan and organize patient care assignments for program placed students according to student level.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
• Ability to facilitate student learning experiences to ensure mastery of stated objectives.
• Ability to evaluate student learning using the clinical evaluation tool.
• Ability to adhere to all regulatory requirements for student supervision.
• Ability to function as a licensed health professional and educator.
• Model a positive culture of a healthcare professional.
• Adapt instruction and communication patterns to meet diverse learner needs.
• Meet physical demands of clinical shift schedule.
• Proficiency with all fundamental program‑specific skills and equipment.
• Maintain confidentiality of student and patient information.

• Prior teaching experience, preferable in a college setting.
• Experience using electronic dental records and classroom technology.
