Position: Information System Technology Adjunct Faculty (Part-Time)

Overview

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board. Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County.

The College was established in 1966 and has grown to more than 9,000 students in credit programs and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western is accepting applications for part-time Information Systems Technology (IST) Adjunct Faculty in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Adjunct faculty are appointed on a course-by-course, semester basis as needed. IST adjunct faculty teach college-level courses in person on the main campus, as well as hybrid or distance learning/online courses. Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their teaching disciplines and in trends in community college education and to participate actively in departmental communication.

Required Qualifications:

Two years of related occupational experience.

Educational requirements depend on the course(s) being taught:
Transfer courses require a Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Information Systems Technology (IST), Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or a related field. Other IST courses require a Bachelor’s degree in IST, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or related field.

All Adjunct Faculty positions require excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams; ability to develop learning strategies, curricula and assessments; and the ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.

Additional Considerations

Master’s degree in the teaching field, experience teaching in a college setting, demonstrated skills in working with diverse populations, and experience using technology in the classroom and teaching online. Occupational experience and current certifications in the topic of interest may be considered.
