School of BTT Building Trades and Construction Management Adjunct Faculty (Part-Time)

Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for part‑time adjunct faculty in Building Trades and Construction Management in the School of Business, Technology, and Trades (BTT). They teach college‑level courses in‑person on the main campus, as well as hybrid or online courses. Course subjects include blueprint reading, building codes, construction, shop practices, building inspection, construction management, carpentry, plumbing, and related topics.

Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their disciplines, participate actively in departmental communication, and support a diverse student body.

Job Description

Adjunct faculty positions are appointed on a course‑by‑course, semester basis as needed. The role involves designing syllabi, delivering instruction, assessing student performance, and aligning course materials with industry standards.

Responsibilities
  • Teach college‑level courses in Building Trades and Construction Management.
  • Develop and maintain course syllabi, assessments, and instructional materials.
  • Deliver instruction in‑person, hybrid or online formats.
  • Stay current with industry trends, building codes and community college education practices.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and department staff.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus recognized industry certifications (e.g., journeyman or master’s tradesman, contractor license, OSHA 10 or 30).
  • Five years of occupational experience in the building or trades field.
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints or work drawings with reference to local, state and national building codes.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to write syllabi and exams; develop learning strategies, curriculum and assessments.
  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and varying abilities.
Additional Considerations
  • Associate’s degree in Engineering Construction, Architecture, Electrical Technology, or Technical Studies plus two years of occupational experience in building, construction management or related field.
  • Knowledge of construction estimating, contracts, bidding process, insurance, and/or taxes.
  • Experience using technology in the classroom.
  • Experience teaching at the high school or community college level.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned or assist the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor.
