Southern Utah University seeks a writing specialist to work in the Graduate Writing Center. The Graduate Writing Specialist would work in a hybrid capacity as both a writing consultant and assistant administrator. The primary role of the specialist would be to assist SUU graduate students with a variety of writing projects (including papers, literature reviews, capstone projects, and more) at any stage of the writing process (from brainstorming to drafting and revising) and to liaison with graduate programs.
Approximately ten hours a week would involve assisting the Writing Center Director with administrative tasks as needed, including personnel management (coordinating schedules, hiring and training graduate and undergraduate consultants), updating and implementing policies, and helping with consultant observations and annual assessment.
- Working one-on-one or in small groups with SUU graduate students.
- Supervising other graduate writing consultants.
- Coordinating and maintaining graduate schedule in WCOnline.
- Communicating with graduate programs to ensure student needs are met.
- Remaining current in the practice and pedagogy of writing centers (which can include presenting at relevant conferences).
- Helping with hiring and training of staff, both graduate and undergraduate .
- Attending (and occasionally conducting) required staff meetings and trainings.
- Helping students with MLA, APA, or Chicago citations and formatting.
- Updating and implementing Writing Center policies.
- Helping with annual assessment as needed.
- Offering workshops to support graduate student writers.
- Assisting in observing and providing feedback to writing tutors.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master's degree in English, rhetoric and composition, or closely related discipline.
- At least one year experience tutoring students in writing.
- Strong background in writing center pedagogy.
- Experience working with graduate student writers and genres.
- Demonstrable knowledge of how to support English language learners, students with disabilities, and students with writing anxiety.
- Experience with administration, including hiring and training staff, working with schedules and budgets, and facilitating workshops.
- In accordance with Utah State Code 53B-1-110, appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.
This position is contingent of funding.
