Position Summary
The Department of Engineering and Technology at Southern Utah University (SUU) invites applications for a faculty position within the Engineering Technology program at the rank of Professional in Residence, Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. This is a full-time faculty position to begin in Fall 2026 and is open to candidates with: a Bachelor's degree (candidate must be working towards a master's degree and have applicable industry experience), a Master's degree (for a non-tenure-track appointment) or a Ph.D. (for a tenure-track appointment) in Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Engineering Technology, Architecture, Construction Management, or a closely related field.
The position will be at the SUU campus in Cedar City, Utah. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment and ability to teach at the undergraduate level. This position includes benefits that may include relocation expenses to hired candidates for on-site employment.
Essential Functions
- Teaching undergraduate courses in CAD software and design-focused engineering technology.
- Curriculum development, assessment responsibilities, and student mentorship.
- The successful candidate will bring professional expertise and tools in civil and architectural design to advance the Engineering Technology program in coordination with related programs within the Department of Engineering and Technology and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at SUU.
- Teaching a broad range of undergraduate courses in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, BIM, and related design applications.
- Contributing to assessment and accreditation efforts, including documentation for ABET continuous improvement.
- Developing curriculum that fosters student engagement and learning outcomes.
- Actively participating in departmental decision-making on pedagogy and curriculum design.
- Advising and mentoring undergraduate students.
- Maintaining labs and design software environments, including supervision of student assistants and adherence to safety protocols.
- All SUU faculty are expected to conduct scholarly activity (for a tenure-track appointment), actively participate in service committees, and contribute to a robust and dynamic environment for student learning.
- Faculty are expected to provide quality educational experiences, maintain a student-centered learning environment, and collaborate with colleagues to ensure that programs remain flexible, innovative, and responsive to student and industry needs.
- Non-tenure-track faculty typically teach 30 credit hours per year (roughly five 3-credit courses per semester), while tenure-track faculty teach 24 credit hours per year (roughly four 3-credit courses per semester).
- Faculty are generally expected to teach in a face-to-face format.
Education & Experience
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's, or Ph.D., degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Engineering Technology, Architecture, Construction Management, or a closely related field (degree determines whether appointment is non-tenure-track, tenure-track). A candidate with a Bachelor's degree and significant experience may be considered (at a rank of Professional in Residence).
- Ability to deliver quality instruction for undergraduate Engineering Technology courses in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, BIM, and architectural/civil design.
- Demonstrated knowledge with compute software commonly used in civil and architectural design (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Navisworks, or similar).
- Excellent written, oral communication, interpersonal-relationship and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, program development, and student mentorship.
- Proven ability to manage technology-focused projects and laboratory environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant industry experience with CAD software and design.
- Teaching experience with demonstrated accomplishment at the undergraduate level.
- Hands-on professional experience in civil, architectural, or construction design projects.
- Experience with ABET accreditation of technology or engineering programs.
- Experience advising student clubs focused on architecture, civil engineering, or design competitions.
- Industry certifications in software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, BIM tools, or similar.
- Familiarity or interest in emerging tools and technologies, such as VR/AR applications in civil and architectural design.
- Surveying fundamentals and applications.
- AI applications related to Civil 3D or architectural software Visualization/rendering tools (e.g., Sketch Up, Blue Beam, Arkio, Unreal Engine, Unity).
