Overview

Based in Cedar City, Utah through August 31, 2026

Utah State University Extension in Iron County, Utah, is seeking motivated college students to assist with monitoring livestock equipped with virtual fencing collars in remote grazing environments. This position supports applied research and demonstration projects focused on innovative grazing management. Technicians will work both independently and as part of a team to collect data, monitor cattle distribution, troubleshoot equipment, and contribute to outreach materials.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor cattle movement, behavior, and distribution within virtual fencing systems
  • Identify key forage species and monitor grazing use on Cedar Mountain rangelands
  • Recognize and report presence of poisonous or toxic plants that may impact livestock health
  • Check, maintain, and troubleshoot virtual fencing collars and associated equipment
  • Accurately collect, record, and organize field data (e.g., grazing patterns, plant use, animal location, system performance)
  • Compile and summarize data using spreadsheets and basic data management tools
  • Assist in developing reports, fact sheets, and outreach materials
  • Communicate regularly with project leaders regarding observations, concerns, and system issues (including forage conditions and plant risks)
  • Maintain equipment in proper working condition and follow all protocols and instructions carefully
  • Operate UTVs safely in steep, rugged terrain
  • Navigate remote grazing allotments with limited or no cell service
  • Work collaboratively with team members while also demonstrating the ability to work independently
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working with cattle or livestock required
  • Experience or willingness to assist in writing fact sheets or technical summaries
  • Proficiency with basic computer programs (e.g., Excel, Word, data entry platforms)
  • Valid driver's license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials
  • Confidence driving on dirt roads and operating UTVs (experience preferred)
  • Reliable access to transportation to and from work sites

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to identify common rangeland plant species, including key forage and poisonous plants found on Cedar Mountain (or willingness to learn quickly)
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot basic equipment or technology issues in the field
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in data collection and reporting
  • Ability to clearly communicate observations, including vegetation conditions and potential risks, to supervisors and team members
  • Ability to work independently in remote settings with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and adaptability
