Hawkeye Community College, in conjunction with Black Rocket Productions, is seeking enthusiastic, motivated and talented individuals to work as a Lead Instructor to help teach exciting classes based in Model UN, Mock Trial, and Young Investors!
This is a perfect job for K12 certified classroom teachers with summers off who want to teach children and add to their teacher toolkit. Lead Instructors are adults who are responsible for the well-being and education of the students. A lead instructor may have either a degree/experience in education or significant experience in one of the content areas. They must have a strong understanding of the course concepts being taught as well as any techniques involved.
Classroom management skills are preferred.
Upon completion of the Black Rocket training program, instructors must demonstrate competency in the core concepts. In addition to teaching responsibilities, lead instructors are also responsible for the supervision of staff, equipment management, and enforcement of site policies. This is a seasonal position. Experience with leadership teaching preferred, but not required. Training is provided and begins in April 2026.
Get paid to build your resume and have a ton of fun! Training is paid and mostly online with some onsite at Hawkeye Community College. Each new hire will attend an online training program to learn the curriculum and the Black Rocket approach.
The position is full day (8:30 am - 4:30 pm), Monday-Thursday during the summer months.
Experience and SkillsQualifications for Lead Instructor:
- Bachelor’s degree (or nearly completed)
- Experience working with kids ages 6-14
Teaching Certification strongly preferred
Must be available the weeks listed above
Experience with leadership teaching is preferred but not required
Excellent problem-solving skills
- Prepare adequately by reviewing and internalizing the prepared curricula for the courses to be taught.
- Prepare for and deliver multiple rotations of curriculum per day to groups of up to 20 campers.
- Familiarize oneself with the necessary software and course content in order to educate and utilize in the classroom.
- Implement the curriculum as written, adapting it as needed to improve the camper experience or accommodate individual campers.
- Provide leadership, energy and camp spirit, constantly assessing group dynamics and the needs of individual campers.
- Supervise Assistant Instructors working in your program area and inspire them to become excellent instructors.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in and outside the classroom.
This is a summer seasonal position compensated at $350 per class, which includes training time and instruction time.
