Job DescriptionBasic Function: The para educator position is either instructional or delivers other direct or indirect services to children, youth, and/or their parents or guardians. The position supports the creation of a safe, positive teaching and learning environment; student development in intellectual, physical, social, emotional, behavioral domains; nurturance of positive productive relationships; integration of technology to support student learning; and exposure of students to ethical and professional role models.
Duties are performed under the direction of teachers or other licensed staff. Specific activities and responsibilities vary considerably among several types of para educator assignment. The following general functions may become part of a para educator assignment.
Essential Functions- Classroom assistance: Under the direction of a licensed employee, a para educator may prepare instructional materials, correct student work, record grades, monitor progress, directly assist individual students or small groups in instructional activities, and maintain bulletin boards or other classroom environment aspects.
- Supervision: Under the direction of a licensed employee, a para educator may supervise students in various settings (lunchrooms, playgrounds, study halls, passageways, classrooms, bus loading/unloading areas, regular bus travel, field trips, and other assigned supervisory functions).
- Special Needs: Working with students with special needs including Individual Education Plans (IEP), Individual Health Plans (IHP), 504 plans, lift/carry, correctly position students with physical disabilities, and ELL students.
- Activities of Daily Living: Assist students with dietary needs, feeding, escorting to restrooms, toileting, diapering if needed, incontinence care, and hygiene needs.
- Office functions: Perform clerical/secretarial duties including word processing, data entry, bookkeeping, filing, machine operations, conference registration material preparation, cumulative folder entries, lunch accounting, and attendance duties.
- Media assistance: Assist licensed media staff and instructional staff at the building level with library functions, book fair assistance, and material inventory.
- Other duties: Perform other duties and responsibilities as determined by building principal, including participation in professional development.
- Skills: oral and written communications; listening; providing clear and concise instructions; basic use of a personal computer.

Certifications:
high school diploma or equivalent. Professional certification such as CDA or post‑secondary education may be required in certain circumstances.
